I used to love being a tech at that university back in the day (early 2000s). I loved going to the events and seeing the community and sharing of knowledge and experiences.

I recently keep getting head hunters call me about applying for jobs in that department. The last one was for 20k more than I make now. The head hunters, sorry recruiters, eventually tell me the university.

I tell them the truth. That place is toxic and I would rather die penniless in the streets than work there. Although I never had issues with Chris. I did have one of the IT people call me an a**hole. I laughed out loud and agreed with him. And said he was too.

Hey, man, thanks for the comment and the follow. That's pretty funny that you are getinig calls for working as a tech there again. I didn't mind working with the other techs and getting around the campus, but I didn't love the nitpicking and actually being instructed to not help the faculty. And you and Chris went way back, so I understand that. I just think he had it in for me (and Linda did too.) They didn't seem to get that I went from having my own department to being a tech was a step down. Oh, well. Water under the bridge. Happy New Year, man.

Happy New Year. I gotcha. Being forced into the LETS world from your own was a tough experience. To say the least.

Absolutley relatable.

The secret origin of Ultimate Dursin. I think it sucks when you are having to put up with so much bullshit and stressing about money and personality conflicts with a job — and then when you realize only after a lot of time and perspective that you were just a Union employee number on a spreadsheet and a number in the head count. So all the personal care and attention you gave to your clients, professors, work study kids really amounted to a hill of beans when the bean counters start looking at the profit model. Even though you didn’t have great union representation—in the end I think (and could be wrong - never been a part of a union) that you were lucky to have it. Though it certainly must not have felt like it at the time. Thanks for sharing this story! Thanks to you!

Thanks to you for reading, commenting and sharing (The Trifecta!) I wanted to write more about the students and actual good people i worked with, but obviously it wa sgetting long. As far as the union went, I was able to get some of the benefits, like extra money when my supervisor was out for surgery and I did her job, but when push came to shove, they weren't exactly The Teamsters. But it all worked out the way it was supposed to. Maybe some day I'll write a follow-up about working with the students and faculty. Stay tuned!
